Heads, Heart, Hands, and Health

4-H is a fun program the 4th and 5th grades get to take part in every year. The four H's stand for head, heart, hands, and health. They’re implemented into every activity and competition that occur about every month-and-a-half. The students also have jobs voted on for each class, such as: president, vice-president, reporter, secretary, record keeper, and activity leader. There is also an opportunity to go to 4-H camp during the summer.

The activities include the recycling project, baking competitions, poster project, and speech which are all judged to advance to the county competition. All the students are given the task to create any product using only recycled materials. Examples of the recycled inventions include a self-watering flower pot and a toy boat. The fourth grade is instructed to create the best cornbread recipe, while the fifth tries to make the best biscuits where the results are tasted and the best-of-the-best are given awards. Then all of the kids are told to make a poster to promote the 4-H program in an intriguing way. The kids all look forward to the speech contest because there are really no guidelines except to state their own opinion on any topic in an appropriate way.

The officers are elected in each class by nominations. The officers all have very important roles, making the program even more fun! The jobs of each officer consist of specific tasks meant for only their role. For example, the President is to open and close every meeting while the Reporter takes pictures of the competition winners.

4-H camp is held every summer in Crossville, Tennessee for the rising 5th and 6th graders. The camp has many outdoor activities as well as indoor games and crafts. Activity options include: archery, swimming, a talent show, fishing, canoeing, kayaking, dancing, and shooting in a range!
