Scholarships are free money and don’t need to be repaid. Scholarships can come from a variety of places, from state and federal governments to colleges and private companies. Scholarships may be awarded based on your financial need, academic achievement, community service, athletic talent, and many other factors (www.collegefortn.org)

There are three types of federal student aid (grants, loans, and work-study).  To determine eligibility, you must complete the FAFSA (FREE Application for Federal Student Aid):  www.fafsa.gov (never pay to file the FAFSA!)

FAFSA application opens online October 1st for students entering college in Fall 2023!

  • Parents and students need to create their own FAFSA ID by going to https://fsaid.ed.gov/npas/index.htm
  • Apply as close to October 1 as possible - award dollars are often given away on a first-come, first-served basis
  • March 1, 2021 deadline for completing FAFSA for TN Promise and TN Student Assistance Award Programs (FAFSA is also a req't for HOPE Scholarship!)
  • Remember - all students should complete the FAFSA regardless of whether you think you'll quality for federal monies - often this is used an eligibility tool for other scholarships and programs as well!

TN Promise

High school seniors in Tennessee may apply for the Tennessee Promise scholarship, which will provide two years of tuition-free attendance at a community or technical college in Tennessee. Tennessee Promise is a last-dollar scholarship, meaning it will cover the cost of tuition and mandatory fees not met by Pell, Hope or the Tennessee Student Assistance Award. 

Application opens Aug. 1 and must be submimtted by Nov. 1.

UT Promise

UT Promise is an undergraduate scholarship program guaranteeing free tuition and mandatory fees for qualifying Tennessee residents attending UT’s campuses in Knoxville, Chattanooga, Martin and Memphis.  Students who qualify for HOPE and whose family household income is under $50,000 a year are eligible to appy.

  • $1,500 per semester (2 yr college) / $1,750* per semester (4 yr college)
