Merrol Hyde Magnet School

Welcome to Merrol Hyde Athletics - Educating the Whole Child

The Paideia philosophy of educating the whole child—mind, body, and spirit—is one of the core values at MHMS.  To achieve this, and to promote a positive culture of spirit and pride within the student body, all students in grades 7-12 are required to participate in a school sport each year.  Students must attend all practices, games, and/or performances in order to fulfill this requirement.  As you think about the sport(s) you would like to play, keep these things in mind: transportation to away games and off-site facilities is not provided by the school; and 8th graders are allowed to participate in some high school sports.  Students enrolling at MHMS after a team has conducted tryouts will be offered a supplemental tryout.

Substitutions

If you participate in a sport not offered by MHMS, you may request to substitute that sport to fulfill the MHMS sports requirement.  Substitutions MUST be approved before the season starts and meet certain guidelines.  Substitution forms may be requested from Kory Craighead via email.

If you feel you should be exempted from the sports requirement due to a health reason, please email Mr. Frank at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Health information will be kept confidential.

Required Physicals

Each student-athlete must have a current sports physical each year in order to participate in an official school sport.  Physicals must be dated April 15th, 2023 or after to cover the student for all of the 2023-2024 school year.  All official school sports will use Final Forms to upload their signed Physical Examination and Medical Eligibility Form, as well as sign all necessary digital forms. Look at the list of sports below to see which require you to get a physical and use Final Forms.  Please reach out to Kory Craighead with any questions.

The following are official Merrol Hyde School sports and must use Final Forms to complete all physical steps: MS and HS Cross Country, MS and HS Volleyball, HS Golf, HS Girls Soccer, MS and HS Girls and Boys Basketball, HS Bowling, MS and HS Cheerleading, Dance, HS Boys Soccer, HS Girls and Boys Tennis, MS and HS Track.

The following are Merrol Hyde activities that must still use Final Forms, but they do not require an actual doctor's physical.  However, we still strongly encourage your child to get a physical and upload it to Final Forms: Archery and Personal Fitness

The following are co-op sports with Station Camp that require you to sign your child up on Final Forms as a Station Camp athlete and complete all physical steps: MS and HS Football, HS Girls' Flag Football, HS Wrestling, HS Softball, HS Baseball.

All other sports offered at Merrol Hyde are "club sports" and do not require you to submit a physical to the school or use Final Forms.  The coach will share any paperwork with you that is needed.  You can see the full list of offered sports under the "athletics" tab.
