Grade 7
Fall trip updates soon for SY 07-08
How would you like your science
classroom to be decorated in magnificent foliage, chirp like a
cricket and smell as fresh as the outdoors?
That is what the 7th graders experienced on their field trip in
September to The Great Smokey Mountain Institute at Tremont.
With perfect weather backing them up, 50 7th graders, several
teachers and a parent made the eastward trek. It was more than
beautiful scenery and energizing hikes in the woods. The
experience involved theatrical accounts of the history of Walker
Valley, explorations for salamanders in streams and close up
personal experiences with hawks and owls. The students
experienced environmental science in a real world setting along
with evenings of campfires, folk dancing and mountain bluegrass.
One of the most remembered events by all was the solo hike. Each
participant spent time alone in the quiet of the forest
contemplating the beauty of our earth and renewing a commitment
to keep it that way. Wouldn't it be great if class was this way
all the time?
