YMCA’s Youth Legislature Program at MHMS

This semester, students at Merrol Hyde Magnet School will become “Legislators in the General Assembly of Tennessee”. By participating in the YMCA sponsored program, each student will complete a unit of study called Tennessee Youth Legislature. Within this unit of study, students will learn about our local state government, delve into the Tennessee State Constitution, learn how our taxes are collected and used, research and write a Bill, present that Bill to the class or at the Youth Legislature Convention and then role play the part of a State Legislator or State Senator.

Each student will be expected to complete this unit of study according to rubric specifications. Convention attendance is optional and will be offered to all who complete the work according to the guidelines. Convention delegates will select their team partners and gain further support and encouragement through a club that has been formed just for this event. Each student has a calendar that keeps them abreast of all meetings and class days. Students attending the convention have copies of letters to parents, cost sheets, and permission forms.

  • High School Youth Legislature: March 25-28, 2004

  • Middle School Youth Legislature: April 30, 2004
