COLLEGE
PLANNING SCHEDULE:
FRESHMAN
YEAR
- Become aware of your strengths,
abilities, and weaknesses.
- Investigate career information
in areas that interest you and match your abilities.
- Analyze the courses you should
be taking throughout high school to prepare for those careers.
- Discuss career interests and
postsecondary education possibilities with your parents.
- Meet and talk with your school
counselor about yourself and your future.
- Become knowledgeable of college
entrance requirements.
- Make sure that you have
fulfilled the prerequisites for each class for which you have enrolled for
your sophomore year.
- Join clubs and activities in
your area of interest. Take
leadership positions when possible.
SOPHOMORE
YEAR
- Begin looking at college
catalogs and other material including financial aid material.
- Attend Sumner County College
Night at Vol State in the fall to meet college
representatives and accumulate college materials.
- Take the PSAT in October for
practice in taking college admissions tests. Review item analysis on the PSAT Score
Report.
- Take the PLAN (pre ACT) for
career inventory information and practice for the ACT.
- Make certain your high school
course selections are appropriate for your college/career interests.
- Continue to talk with your
parents about your interests and about your family’s ability to help you
financially.
- Continue to discuss your
interests and concerns with your counselor.
- Apply for a summer job or
volunteer opportunity. Research
summer programs in your area of interest.
Ask your counselor or teachers whether they know of any
opportunities. Use www.fastweb.com to search for
internships in your area.
- Become involved in clubs and
activities to develop leadership skills and expand special abilities and
interests.
- Make sure that you have

your junior year.
