Merrol Hyde Magnet School Swim Team is comprised of high school students who are interested in pursuing competitive swimming as their athletic elective. The Hawks will compete against other member schools of the Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association (http://www.mthssa.net/) and currently compete in Division I.  There are 20 spots on this year’s swim team.  Middle school students will be encouraged to participate if space allows with preference going to 8th grade students.  The High School Team Roster will be set at the end of the first week of practice.  Any empty spots will be offered to 8th grade swimmers first.  If there are more 8th graders than spots, try-outs will be held (the first two weeks of practice).  Middle school swimmers will experience training for their high school years and be exposed to a limited competition schedule swimming exhibition against other high school swimmers and against other middle school teams. They will train with their high school teammatesand  are expected to demonstrate the maturity and commitment necessary for participation in a varsity sport.

Cost:

Team Dues: $75.00

In addition, athletes must provide these materials themselves (students do not need to purchase brand new items unless their caps, goggles, and suits are in need of replacement with the exception of updating their team suit when there is a design change):

  • Competition Suit (tank style for girls, brief or jammer style for boys)

Note:  Your competition suit will last longer if you don’t practice in it.  Consider             purchasing one suit for practice and one suit for competition. ACME Multisports          has a good selection of practice and grab bags suits.

  • Goggles

Note: goggles are not the place to economize.  Expect to pay about $12.00 for a           good pair. Spare goggles are recommended as well.

  • Swim Cap (will be worn by girls and boys in competition and by all girls and boys with long hair for practice). Team caps will be provided

Note: Save your MHMS cap for meets.  Wear a practice cap for workouts.  It is          recommended that you have a spare competition cap at all meets

Team Communication:

Parent/Swimmer Orientation:

Team Roster:

  • Will be provided to every family to facilitate team communication

E-mail:

  • Will be the primary method of communication.

  • Parents should check their swimmer’s bags.  It is my experience that not all handouts make it home.
  • The Team Manager or their designee will coordinate any e-mail communication that is to be distributed to the team.
  • Parents and athletes should contact the Team Manager with any questions or issues that develop as the season progresses.

Expectations of Team Parents:

  • Join the MHMS Athletic Booster Club and support their events.  The swim team benefits from significant financial support from the ABC.  They cover a significant portion of the cost of lane rental at the YMCA. • Be prepared to assist the Team Manager in any number of duties such as: coordination uniform orders, coordination of team events/parties, coordination of team fundraiser, etc.
  • Provide your athlete with nutritious snacks for meets.  It takes a lot of energy to race.  Swimmers need to able to “fuel up”.

You are encouraged to purchase the insurance that the school offers.  This affordable coverage makes sense even if your family has insurance.  It has been helpful in meeting deductibles and co-pays should your swimmer become injured while at practice or competition.  Merrol Hyde Magnet School, the Coach, and Team Manager are not responsible for injuries incurred unless deemed to be solely responsible for damage.
  • All swimmers are required to maintain a 2.5 semester GPA in the season/seasons that they are members of the swim team. In order to ensure an athlete’s academic eligibility, it is the swimmer’s responsibility to notify the team manager if their semester GPA falls below the requirement.

A Healthy Swimmer

Rest:

Swimmers should get 7-8 hours of sleep a night and rest following a difficult workout.

Diet:

A well-balanced diet according to the USDA standards is good. Athletes should:

  1. Eat a minimal amount of sugar (too much refined sugar leads swimmers to “fake energy” and sometimes difficulty sleeping).
  2. Eat plenty of carbohydrates (not just breads and pasta). Be wary of refined sugars and flours. Suggestions – Whole grain bread and cereal, raw fruits, milk, legumes
  3. Drink few, if any, carbonated beverages and juices high in sugar; both disrupt a swimmer’s ability to perform at their best. Water is a swimmer’s best friend, .
  4. Drink plenty of water. Fluid replacement is important before, during, and after a workout. Signs of dehydration may be fatigue, dizziness, or a headache.

BEFORE – drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water the day before.

                 - drink 16-20 ounces of fluids two hours before exercising                                                 (lunch)

                                        - drink 6-16 ounces of fluid thirty minutes before working out

                                          (after school)

DURING – drink one 8 ounce bottle of water during a workout

AFTER – drink two 8 ounce glasses of water before bedtime

Common Health Problems:

·         Fatigue – Weariness associated with excessive physical workout.

Prevention-Stay well rested, fueled, and hydrated

Solution – Discuss changes in sleeping or diet with Coach/Team Manager and your family doctor.

·         “Swimmer’s Ear” (Otitis Externa) – an infection of the ear and/or outer ear canal. It can cause the ear to itch or become red and inflamed so that head movement or touching of the ear is painful. There may also be pus.

Prevention - Be cautious! 1) Always shower after swim practice to clean oneself of any foreign bacteria and be sure to dry ears. 2) An alcohol-based product known as “swimmer’s ear” may be purchased so that a few drops applied into ear canal after swimming removes excess water.

3) Avoid putting foreign objects in ear such as fingers, long q-tips that can scratch ear canal

Solution – See your family doctor for antibiotics.

·         Shoulder Pain-is a common ailment for swimmers.

Prevention-Strengthening shoulder muscles with stretch cord exercises,                                making sure your warm-up and warm down are adequate, maintaining                                          consistent practice attendance, and observing proper swimming                                                  technique are the best ways to prevent shoulder pain/discomfort.

Solution-In most cases, shoulder pain can be alleviated with the use of                                  OTC anti-inflammatory drugs, icing, and shoulder muscle strengthening.                           Again, proper    swimming technique is essential to good shoulder health.                                    Report any shoulder pain to your Coach and your family doctor.
