Healthy Swimmer
Rest:
Swimmers should get 7-8 hours
of sleep a night and rest following a difficult workout.
Diet:
A well-balanced diet
according to the USDA standards is good. Athletes should:
BEFORE
– drink at least eight 8 ounce glasses of water the day before.
- drink 16-20 ounces of fluids two hours
before exercising (lunch)
- drink
6-16 ounces of fluid thirty minutes before working out
(after school)
DURING – drink one 8 ounce bottle of water
during a workout
AFTER – drink two 8 ounce glasses of water
before bedtime
Common Health Problems:
·
Fatigue –
Weariness associated with excessive physical workout.
Prevention-Stay well rested, fueled, and hydrated
Solution – Discuss changes in sleeping or diet with Coach/Team
Manager and your family doctor.
·
“Swimmer’s Ear” (Otitis Externa) – an infection of the ear and/or outer
ear canal. It can cause the ear to itch or become red and inflamed so that head
movement or touching of the ear is painful. There may also be pus.
Prevention - Be cautious! 1) Always
shower after swim practice to clean oneself of any foreign bacteria and be sure
to dry ears. 2) An alcohol-based product known as “swimmer’s ear” may be
purchased so that a few drops applied into ear canal after swimming removes
excess water.
3) Avoid putting foreign objects in ear such as
fingers, long q-tips that can scratch ear canal
Solution – See your family doctor
for antibiotics.
·
Shoulder Pain-is a common ailment for swimmers.
Prevention-Strengthening
shoulder muscles with stretch cord exercises, making sure your warm-up and warm down are
adequate, maintaining consistent practice attendance, and
observing proper swimming technique are the best ways to
prevent shoulder pain/discomfort.
Solution-In
most cases, shoulder pain can be alleviated with the use of OTC anti-inflammatory drugs, icing, and shoulder
muscle strengthening. Again, proper swimming technique is essential to good
shoulder health. Report any shoulder pain to your
Coach and your family doctor.
