Astronomy Club News

New to Merrol Hyde this year is the initiation of the Astronomy Club.  It is sponsored by the science department and proves to be a huge success.  The focus of the club is to bring astronomy into the lives of students and bring students into the view of astronomy.

Our first project is the building of a telescope for our school.  This event is sponsored by the Scopes for Schools project in conjunction with Vanderbilt University.  Students selected from the club will attend a one day workshop at Vanderbilt Dyer Observatory in Brentwood, TN to participate in the construction of the scope.  We look forward to its completion and its future use at the school.

The club is also working in partnership with the Cumberland Astronomical Society, an amateur astronomy club based out of Gallatin, TN  (www.cumberlandastronomicalsociety.org) and participated in Mars Opposition held at Lock 4 Park in Gallatin, TN on October 29th.  Merrol Hyde students and teachers viewed Mars as they have never seen it before as well as Andromeda Galaxy, Uranus and various constellations and stars.

Activities of this type will continue in the future and we get our club off to a great start!

Clear Skies!!
