Music
Choral
MHMS is proud to feature four choirs. Each student is responsible for purchasing concert attire ordered through the school at the beginning of the class year. (Assistance is provided if needed.) Fund-raising opportunities are available throughout the school year to help students build personal accounts to pay for expenses. The choral department presents two concerts a year that includes all choirs.
Middle School
Middle school students are placed in grade- level choirs that meet for three quarters of each school year. (Students rotate out one quarter for reading.) Each class focuses on proper vocal technique, sight-reading skills, basic music theory, listening, and general music history. Sixth and seventh grade students are a combined choir also focusing on keyboard techniques. No audition required.
High School
Rising and current high school females are eligible to audition at the end of each school year for show choir. One year/semester of middle or high school experience choir is required. Auditions consist of sight-reading, performance of a 45-second Broadway or pop selection, and a dance routine taught during auditions. Show choir uniforms are more costly than regular choir uniforms due to added embellishments and detail. Black character shoes are required. This ensemble’s feature presentation is during the winter concert.
Concert choir is open to all high school students. This semester long course, offered twice a year, explores a range of musical styles. All classes learn beginning to advanced vocal technique, sight-reading skills, basic music theory, listening, music history, and conducting. Concert choir also provides holiday music for area businesses and associations. No audition required.
