Reading
I would like to introduce myself as Merrol Hyde Magnet School's Reading Specialist, Penney Gilliland.
Merrol Hyde Magnet School is committed to providing excellent instruction. We believe that a comprehensive school-wide literacy effort is the cornerstone to this instruction. Every teacher in this building is a reading teacher. We take our responsibilities very seriously and are constantly striving to afford every child with many opportunities to read and discuss their reading with others.
School-wide literacy is dependent on several factors. We are engaging in whole-school planning to implement components of a successful school-wide literacy plan that is integrative and interdisciplinary. This includes:

Continuous reading instruction for all students,

Reading instruction that is individually appropriate,
-
Assessment that informs instruction, and
-
Ample opportunities to read and discuss reading with others.
There is continual collaboration with our administrator, our librarian, our guidance counselor, classroom teachers, myself, and other district educators to administer a reading program that meets the needs of all of our students.
We would like to invite all of our parents and community members to be stakeholders in these efforts by doing the following:

Be positive role models for reading and writing.

Provide an abundance of reading materials and exhibit a positive attitude about reading and writing.

Encourage students to read.

Be engaged as partners with the school in the academic lives of all of our students.
I look forward to working with all of our students and have had the opportunity to meet several and to be included in some classroom activities. I encourage any parent who would like to meet with me or who would like any information about their child's progress or reading habits to please call and schedule an appointment. I would also be happy to discuss our plans to teach reading in the content area as I collaborate with our teachers and with all of our families to enrich the academic lives of Merrol Hyde Magnet students.
