Mathematics
Math competitions will take place in April
at Volunteer State Community College for Algebra I, Geometry,
and Algebra II. students. Teams will be selected at a later date
from students currently enrolled in these subjects.
The sixth and seventh grade math programs are advanced programs designed to prepare Merrol Hyde Magnet School students to enter the 8th grade algebra program. This program is aligned with the state Mathematics Curriculum Standards and the NCTM Principles and Standards for School Mathematics.
Topics covered are: a) Number and Operations b) Algebra c) Geometry d) Measurement, and e) Data Analysis and Probability. There will be an emphasis on problems solving incorporating each of the above areas of study.
Merrol Hyde Magnet School offers Algebra I to both eighth and ninth grade students. Ninth graders take Advanced Honors Algebra I and receive advanced honors credit for the class. Topics to be covered in both classes include: Linear equations and inequalities, quadratic equations, polynomials, systems of linear equations, rational and irrational expressions, graphing functions, regression formulas, and linear programming.
In both classes there will be an emphasis upon application and problem solving. Technology with the use of the graphing calculator will be utilized to enhance understanding and problem solving skills. The Advanced Honors Class will be a more accelerated study of algebra and will delve into Algebra II if time permits. |
